Pam Fritz, Senior Guidance Adviser (343-8484 STM or 342-8263 home)
Email: pwfritz@rccss.net or ptfritz@rap.midco.net

I am on a very flexible schedule, so if you want to meet with me, just leave me a note or call me. I will be glad to meet during your free periods or lunch.

As a senior considers various options, he/she needs to check the requirements of each college or university. Many of the universities and colleges prefer to have students view their websites and then apply online. We have several cd's and cassettes that offer visual tours of colleges and universities. We have information available in the guidance office and representatives will be visiting STM throughout the year. It is truly worth your while to meet these "college reps" and get the information right from the source. Individual schools will vary in their requirements and "it's easy if you know how " (thanks Mr. Sullivan)!

I am including the SD CollegePrep Model Program of Study that is advocated for all students:

Grade Math English Social Science Laboratory Science
8th Algebra 1
9th Geometry, English, Am. History, Physical or Earth Science
10th Algebra 11, English, World History, Biology
11th Trigonometry, English, Am. Gov., Chemistry
12th Adv. Senior Math, English, Econ., Psych., Physics

This helps your student to be in position to not only be prepared for college but also qualified to receive many scholarships.

The STM handbook is on our web page and has all the requirements for graduation. If you have any doubts about what you might need, Mrs. Strand is our counselor and she can review your schedule.

Reminder: As modern technology makes for a much more global workplace,
many universities are requiring a minimum of two years of a single foreign language for incoming freshman. If in doubt, take the second year so that you do not have to worry as you apply to various colleges.

In the Sunday issue (Sept.,07) of the Denver Post, there was an article about the importance of volunteering among youth. Churches, organizations(honor societies) and graduations standards sometimes demand volunteer hours as well as academic achievement. College admissions admit that the right record of of community service can make "the" difference in favor of acceptance in some cases. Many schools have also built stronger connections between coursework and volunteerism--service learning--which injects relevance to academia by applying study to real-life community needs. Finally, numerous scholarships are available that are tied to volunteer work! So get involved and DOCUMENT- what you do! ( I have had several college representatives stress this in the last three months!)

Universities and colleges like to host a day for juniors and seniors to visit their campuses. It is a good way for a student to participate in the campus life. Please check with me or on-line with the colleges.
